the president's excellent working relationship with republican new jersey governor chris christie in the aftermath of the storm. how is the white house handling those complaints? >> well, martin, good afternoon. the white house publicly is saying they're not going to comment on the complaints or the president's visit really, what it could mean politically, because they say this is not a time for politics. i can tell you privately though that both democrats and republicans were a little bit surprised by governor christie's tone yesterday. they said he could have thanked the president, but he was really effusive about it. i want to make the important point i spoke to one of my republican sources who lived in the areas that was battered by sandy and he said, look, it is possible that governor christie is just very thankful for the president being there because there are so many people who are suffering. having said that, we are less than a week out from election day, so, of course, the visit will be viewed through a political lens. of course, governor christie presides over a blue state

this insomnia that chris christie spoke that so disgusted conservatives, here's a reminder. >> i cannot thank the president enough for his personal concern and compassion for our state and for the people of our state. >> i just want to thank him for his extraordinary leadership and partnership. >> joining me to discuss that disgusting press conference is dr. james peterson, ari melber, and lili gil valetta. dr. peterson, can you explain to me the problem here. if it was a republican president and democratic governor, they presumably would have acted in exactly the same way in the face of a storm. what's the problem? >> i don't know. i mean, should we pat them on the back for doing their jobs? i mean, that's essentially what the governor and the president are doing here. >> have you got rupert murdoch condemning him? >> i'm not sure we should be paying any attention to rupert murdoch at all. let me say this, they're doing a great job in a disastrous moment and that's why they get the platform they have. people forget that this great optics for governor christie who is a blue state

visiting the state himself, new jersey governor chris christie dismissed the idea with a large dose of disdain. >> is there any possibility that governor romney may go to new jersey to tour some of the damage with you? >> i have no idea nor am i the least bit concerned or interested. i have got a job to do here in new jersey that's much bigger than presidential politics and i could care less about any of that stuff. >> it's no wonder really. romney's answer to disaster relief being to shut down fema and place the burden of recovery on the back of the states and the private sector. something that might be a bit off-putting to governor christie on a day like today. we'll have more on the storm and the election in this hour but let's get to richard lui who is in battery park where the waters of new york harbor bashed into vulnerable flood zones. richard, 24 hours since the storm surge began there. how do thiges longs look right ? >> reporter: 24 hours ago looked a lot like this, a lot of white caps, stormy movement of the water. of course, the water at that point 24 hours ago was just

what chris christie said this week. obama governs from the center. you contrast that to everything dr. patterson was saying, how this guy has campaigned when he needed the social conservatives to get the primary -- to get the nomination, he catered to every single right wing wing nut policy position like he was running for the president of the john burch society. the idea he would not be a marionette is betrayed by the facts of the campaign. >> the wonderful character of willard mitt romney. julian, dana -- sorry, that's wrong, julian, michelle, cottle, and professor james peterson, thank you so much. and if you can't get enough, we have got a special election edition live from democracy plaza at 30 rock tomorrow, saturday night, at 7:00 p.m. so please do join us. next, if you can't keep them from the polls, keep them from casting their vote. stay with us. begin. tomato, obviously. haha. there's more than that though, there's a kick to it. wahlalalalallala! smooth, but crisp. it's kind of like drinking a food that's a drink, or a drink that's a food, woooooh!
